Tucked away in the small mountain town of Estes Park sits a small pub called the Wapiti. In case you were wondering,  a “Wapiti” is the second largest species of deer which flourish in the Estes park area. But, If seeing the heads of these creatures mounted to walls, while eating, this may not be the place for you.

Atmosphere:  This location is in the downtown area of Estes Park right along the Thompson River with the Rocky Mountains as the backdrop. This place is tucked away behind small offices and souvenir shops but the signs will get you there. It is everything you should expect a mountain town restaurant and bar. One side is a small eating area with tables and chairs situated near a blazing fire place while the other side is a dark, rugged and inviting. The paneled wood walls are donned with beer plaques, historical  local art and mounted deer heads. The ceiling is a combination of wooden beams and glass, which gives the dining area an outdoor feeling while warm inside.

Service:  When walking in we were greeting by two hostesses who speedily sat us at a table. Our server was prompt and polite offering us the daily specials for lunch and drinks. After lunch we visited the dark bar and had to wait a bit to get a drink but the bartender was friendly.

Drinks:   Having 100 Colorado bottled (or canned) beers to choose from made it a tough choice but we managed. The menu has everything categorized by beer type with everything from IPA’s, Bocks, Stouts, Ciders and even a unique section. We tried the Hercules IPA by Great Divide out of Denver and True Blond by Ska out of Durango.

Food:  The menu consisted of mostly traditional American bar food with some Mexican and Italian food plates. There is a kids menu and a dinner specials section with some seafood items as well as ribs. They also offer burgers made with elk or buffalo patties for those adventurous, lean meat lovers. We opted for burgers, having the Big Daddy Fire Burger and the Ranch Hand Burger. Both were decent size burgers and decent tasting. The Big Daddy was a bit of a letdown only because it wasn't very “hot”. Our burgers came with potato fries and onion rings. Both were good but the onion rings were definitely memorable above all else.

Amenities:  HD TV’s, free Wi-Fi, catering, reservations, kids menu, patio, royalty rewards cards, vegan menu, largest selection of Colorado beers in the state.

Parking:  Street parking as well as parking lots are available in downtown Estes Park.

The Buzz:  Trivia on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm, Open mic nights on Sundays, happy hour Monday through Friday from 4 pm to 6 pm.

We were lucky enough to stumble upon this place one night while out with friends. This is the perfect place to just chill out, have a beer and play darts or pool while listening to the jukebox.  The patrons posted up where of a mixed variety and all very friendly. 

Atmosphere:  This place is everything you expect from a typical dive bar , yet very clean. It is set up in a strip mall and has a store front entry. Once inside the long bar is on the northern wall with the south side of the bar is filled with pool tables, video game machines and darts. There are recliner couches along the front of the bar, directly under the windows and also towards the back, for those who want to lounge around. There is a jukebox on the back wall that played a lot of country music but offered some rock classics. There is ample seating at the bar and the few high top tables throughout the place.The crowd was very diverse with a few college guys, couples and old guys watching the TV;s around the bar and playing pool. The walls and ceilings are painted in dark colors and decorated with typical beer signs and plaques.

Service:  We only noticed one person working behind the bar and she seemed to have it covered. She was friendly, engaging and knew her liquor.

Drinks:  West End Pub has an average selection of domestics and craft beers.  There is a dry erase board behind the bar listing specials mostly some shots and concoctions we had never heard of, although they sounded good.  We didn't try any of the specialty shots because the bottle of Black Velvet behind the bar was just too enticing and comical. we had to keep it real and toss one back only to then see the bottle of Yukon Jack.  The bar is stocked with  all the usual liquors nothing super high end. 

Food:  There is a small selection of typical bar food here. There did not appear to be menus so we had to ask , but they do carry items such as poppers, burgers, pizza, fries and a few other less healthy options that go perfectly with your beer.

Amenities:  Jukebox , cork dart boards, electronic dart boards, Pool table, HD TV’s, pinball machine, video game machines, mega touch machine, ATM, skeeball, recliners.

Parking:  There is ample parking in the lot where the bar is located.

The Buzz:  Live music on Friday and Saturday  nights, dart tournaments, Wednesday night karaoke, daily drink specials , Monday through Friday Happy Hour .

Mulligans Pub & Sports Club is located in a shopping center just south of Old Town. They advertise as being “voted best pub and best pub food in Fort Collins”. This is the place we go when we need a change from the monotony of the Old Town scene.

Atmosphere:  Upon entering you will notice a lot of wood walls, bar and booths. The place is split into two sides, both have bars, but one is the more “sporty” side with pool tables, darts and a jukebox. The sporty side is a little dimmer with lots of HD-TV’s above the bar and high top tables.The brighter side has a more restaurant feel with booths that have small TV’s in them. Either side gives you the laid back feeling of being in an Irish pub. The crowd is mixed in age range, but Mulligans is definitely not the average college haunt.

Service:  Full service on the restaurant side with servers and a no fluff “seat yourself” attitude.  The sporty side is primarily bar service with the bartenders doubling as cocktail servers. Overall service was above average and our food orders came very quick.

Drinks:  The typical domestics brews are here as well as four- each from the two larger local craft brewers.  The sporty side has a nice ice bin under their draft towers, so you know your always going to get a perfectly chilled pint. We opted for the $3 O’dells during their “thirsty Thursday” happy hour. The selection of scotch and Irish whisky was a little on the small side for an Irish pub.

Food:  The menu features typical pub style food like sandwich’s, burgers, soups salads, and a few Mexican and Asian inspired dishes stuck in between.  With nothing over $11 you should have enough cash left over for dessert. The entrée dinner selection may cost you a few more dollars but the portions are large and worth it. They have an impressive appetizer section with items like hot wings, mussels, jalapeno poppers and brie. During our last visit we had the Reuben sandwich and French dip as recommended by the bartender. Both were delicious and very filling. Or, maybe it was the beers?

Amenities:  Touch tunes jukebox, patio in front, pool tables, shuffle board, TV’s, dart boards,fire pit outside, banquet rooms, interactive Wii room, free wifi, trivia, small TV’s in booths.

Parking:  There is plenty of parking surrounding the bar in the shopping center where it is located.

We are not sure what prompted us to visit The Crown Pub while bar hopping last year, but we are glad we did. What draws us back to this Fort Collins staple? It must be the pints, the plethora of scotches, and good pub food.

Atmosphere:  When we walked in we immediately noticed the large wooden bar on the north side dominating most of this English style pub. Our eyes kept drifting back to the rows of scotches lined seductively behind the bar, because this place is definitely a step up from your average Fort Collins pub. The dark colors with the warm wood and dark carpet give the dining area a very cozy feel. The large windows facing College Ave at the front, can be a little distracting in the day light hours, but at night give ample opportunities for people watching.  There is a basement lounge area equipped with a bar, tables and live music on select nights. There is a small patio in front of the building which is usually packed on warmer days.

Service:  We have always had decent service, whether it is at the bar or sitting at a table. The bartenders and servers have always been engaging as well as informative. No complaints.

Drinks:  On their website they advertise "Over 30 single malt Scotch's, Small batch bourbon, 16 drafts and over 20 bottled beers". We figure there really isn't much more to say, but they do offer a full bar.

Food:  The Crown Pub has two menus- One Seasonal and one Classic. The Classic menu consists of pub style classics, appetizers, a few salads and soup. The burger section offers options such as chicken or buffalo meat instead of a half-pound of beef. The Seasonal menu is ever changing but currently offers entrees like Fish n Chips,  Buffalo meatloaf, Blackened Mahi and smoked brisket. Most items are between $10 and $20 but we have not felt ripped off when eating there, the food is good. On this visit we had the Relleno Royale burger and the Blackened Blue Royale burger.

Amenities:  Patio out front, lounge downstairs, TV’s in bar area.

Parking:  Parking available where you can find it in old town.

The Buzz:  Happy hour Monday ~ Friday from 3:00pm - 5:00pm and Sunday ~ Thursday from 10:00pm – Close, live music on Sundays in the lounge.

Right near CSU, in the Campus West area, sits Road 34.  Part bike shop, part deli, part bar, part live venue, this hybrid runs on good times, college kids and an affinity for pedal power.

Atmosphere:  When we walked in our first impression was “ woah that’s a lot of bikes”  and we weren't even in the bike shop side.  Hung from the ceiling, across the entire bar, are bicycles of every kind.  The center of the bar room is dominated by some rustic looking ruff-hewn tables,  as well as an old school VW bus.  Yes a life-size bus, but it doubles as décor and a sound booth. The music varied from hip hop to classic rock, depending on the clientele, but all played at tolerable levels for conversations  The bar itself snakes along the eastern side, leaving plenty of viewing room to see the stage on the south side.  Its apparent that this  place is generally a college hangout during the week .  While a lot of its appeal comes from it’s no- nonsense attitude,  a pressure washer and some industrial cleaner would do this place some good.

Service:  The bar staff was holding down the fort during our visit. They wasted no time while pouring drinks, serving food and taking orders from the tables and they did a stand up job of it.

Drinks:  Our favorite feature in the bar, is the chalkboard display behind all the tap handles. the prices and specials are written in chalk describing  a good selection of micros and domestics . they have a fully stocked bar ready to fulfill the urges or non- beer drinkers too.

Food:  The chalk board theme is carried over to the menu with specialty items being written in colorful display above the bar.  This deli style menu is chock- full of sandwiches that are a  little outside of your garden variety.  With names like fire in the disco, naked homeless man with a blanket, and lawn jockey, you definitely need to pay attention to what you’re ordering. Oh, and don’t forget they have f-ing nachos.  Their words - not ours.

Amenities:  Bike shop, large stage, foosball, large roadside patio, HD flat screen TV’s, 2 pool tables, juke box.

Parking:  There is parking behind the building.  And of course, plenty of places to chain up your bike.

The Buzz:  Live music on Friday and Saturday nights, happy hour all day Sunday ($1 beers & $2.50 bloody marys!).

 Wedged unassumingly on 4^th street, in downtown Loveland is this little dive. We spotted it while in route to other locations and had to give it a try.  First impressions say a lot and for Scotty O’Brian’s, there really isn't much to say. 

Atmosphere:  On the outside this place appears to be the typical inviting dive with glowing beer signs. Once inside you will be taken back a decade with old tube TV’s and a stereo playing music from a poorly tuned radio. This dark and narrow bar is a no frills watering hole or maybe better put, watering hole - in -the - wall. There is a bar along one wall and high top tables along the other, leaving just enough space to walk through. The walls are adorned with beer signs and liquor paraphernalia, but nothing other than a shamrock in the front windows implies this is an Irish pub. There is a mirror back to the bar so we enjoyed our own reflections while having a few beers. This is the kind of place for drowning sorrows or intimate one on one time without the worry of being disturbed.

Service:  The service was good, having two people (presumably the owners) behind the bar and a handful of people to serve.

Drinks:  There are 4 beers on tap and nothing fancy. The bar is fully stocked and able to grant you your drinking wishes.  But don’t come looking for anything fancy here.  This is strictly a no nonsense type of drinking establishment.

Food:  No menu or food here unless you consider popcorn a meal. They do have frozen pizza they will heat up for you if you get really desperate.

Amenities:  Video bowling game, Mega touch, popcorn maker, 1 flat screen TV, old school TV’s music from a radio.

Parking:  Parking is available in downtown Loveland.

Downtown Loveland is booming with new stores, breweries and restaurants, but for us it has become our new destination for drinking. Henry’s pub advertises, on their website, that they have the largest selection of alcohol in the area and that’s all we needed to see to give them a chance.

Atmosphere:  Located in historical down-town Loveland, Henry’s pub is a small but inviting brick building. Inside, the dark, cherry-stained wood walls and warm colors gives it a very comfortable, yet masculine appearance. There is a variety of dark wooden tables throughout as well as booths along the outer walls.  There is a large bar area in the back of the building, with plenty of seating and a few flat screen TV’s. The walls are decorated with the works of local artists and softly illuminated by track lighting, while the rest of the place is dim.

Service:  Upon walking in we were greeted by two hostesses who quickly sat us at a table. Our server was prompt and polite with a good knowledge of the beers on tap. We eventually made our way to the bar, where service was friendly and prompt as well.

Drinks:   Henry’s touts having one of the best selections of top shelf liquors around- and they are correct. While they may have not had all of our favorites, we certainly couldn’t deny that they have a great selection. Now if 18 year old scotch isn’t your thing, then maybe one of the several local craft beers (that they keep on a constant rotation) will wet your whistle.

Food:  The menu consisted of good old American food with many seafood selections. We ordered the Sourdough Burger ($11.99) and the French Dip ($8.99) and both were fresh and tasty. The rest of the menu is what you would expect – Appetizers, Salads, Desserts, Burgers, Soups, Sandwiches and entrees like Steak & Shrimp and Buffalo Meatloaf. Upon first glace, prices seemed immoderate, but after finishing our meals, they were worth it.

Amenities:  HD TV’s, free Wi-Fi, catering, local art on display, kids menu, heat lamp.

Parking:  Street parking is available in downtown Loveland.

Don’t let the outside of this bar fool you. This place gets the five star rating of dive bars even though it’s so much more. After looking up the actual definition of a dive bar, and that being “a relaxed and informal atmosphere—often referred to by local residents as neighborhood bars, where people in the neighborhood gather to drink and socialize” we feel confident with this categorization.

Atmosphere:  The first thing we noticed upon entering this bar is how clean and well maintained it is. The second thing we noticed was the smell of pizza coming from the kitchen area, which was also very clean. There are pool tables through the center with booths along the back wall. The front of the bar features a good size stage and large dance floor. In the back corner there are several tables set up with people of all ages playing poker. There is an outside covered patio and an entire room full of pool tables for the more serious pool sharks. The crowd was a more mid- age- range mix and everyone was friendly.

Service:  There are several servers scurrying around the place making sure everyone is well taken care of. The bartender was engaging and polite. He made sure our drinks were full while attempting to upsell shots, with the guarantee it would make the band sound better.

Drinks:  The bar itself has a nice selection of domestic and craft beers at good prices.  It’s a fully stocked bar that appears to be very well organized as well as clean.  The sign at the end of the bar lists their nightly specials so you can always get a buzz on the cheap.

Food:  The menu is impressive and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as an adequate “pub grub” section. There are sandwiches, salads, Mexican food, desserts, made to order pizzas, but most importantly- rocky mountain oysters. The menu prices are beyond reasonable with nothing above the $10 range. There is a food special daily.

Amenities:  Touch tunes jukebox, large covered patio in back, pool tables and a pool room, video games, ATM machine, dance floor, large stage, boxing machine, Megatouch bar top video games, dart boards.

Parking:  Hatrixx does have a parking lot, but once full it is a tight squeeze. And it does get full.

The Buzz:  Live music on Friday nights,  nightly poker tournaments, dart leagues, pool leagues, open mic comedy night on Thursdays, Sunday’s ladies drink free from 4 to 5 pm. weekend brunch, Tuesday night music jam, daily drink specials.

Lucky Joes has been quenching thirsts since 1995 in it’s prime old town location.  It’s a  favorite hang out of locals and college students, as well as the perfect place to duck into when strolling through old town. We often drop in by day, for people watching on the patio or for the free live music by night. The food and atmosphere never let us down.

Atmosphere: The décor inside  is a blend or Irish pub meets country saloon.The first thing you see is the  big wooden bar with all wood floors and walls that give Lucky Joes a laid back, welcoming feel. This place is pretty dim, even in the day, but it won’t stop you from being overwhelmed by the busy-ness on the walls. There is a giant barrell of shelled peanuts in the front inviting people to take handfuls throwing the shells to the floor and knowing someone else will be cleaning them up. The crowd is mixed, but is dominated by college students Thursday through Saturday nights and because of this you may have to wait in line to get inside. Also, the bathrooms seem to be exceptionally well maintained here.

Service:  Service was quick and even quicker at the bar which was impressive for a very crowded night.  With plenty of bartenders and waitresses on staff, there should never be an issue getting what you need.

Drinks:  They have a fully stocked bar with the usual Fort Collins micro brews on tap, mingled with a few domestics.  The absence of a drink menu adds to the casual atmosphere of the place, and provoked us to try drink specials such as $2 Guinness pints and $3 bomb shots.

Food: The  menu features a mixture of typical bar food such as the 1/3 pound Crunch Burger , the Phrenchy cheese steak sandwich, and Lj’s  Club Sandwich. Lucky Joes menu also features appetizers, soups and salads as well as traditional Irish fare such as the corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie and fish & chips. We usually start with the Irish nacho appetizer which is a healthy enough portion for 3 grown men to call dinner. There are daily food specials that will only set you back $10 at the most.

Amenities: Free peanuts, HD TV’s, fireplace, patio, small stage area, live music.

Parking:  Find parking where you can in old town.

The Tavern is located in Greeley in the St Michael's Square shopping center, hence the name.  There was definitely a lot of planning and thought put into the layout of St. Michael's square.  However, the foresight seems to have ended there.  The lack of any big draw retail stores made it seem kind of like a ghost town for an early Friday evening.  But the Tavern’s warm inviting glow was the light at the end of the tunnel.

Atmosphere:  This is a well thought out and nicely designed bar, from the dark wood to the stain glass windows.  One of the first things you will see when you walk up to the entrance is two separate patios (one is covered) that appear to be a nice place to dine in warmer months. The dim lit bar area greets you as you enter through the front doors and offers seating at dark wooden booths, tall tables and at the bar. There are just a handful of TVs hung around the entire place giving it a less than sports bar kind of feel. It has a large open kitchen that you can see from the all areas of the bar.  While it’s nice being able to see the large wood fire pizza oven and your food being prepared, the constant ogling of the customers by the cooks is a little unnerving. The restaurant is festively decorated for the holidays giving it an even cozier feel.

Service:  We were greeted by a hostess at the front door and per usual we turned down table service for seats at the bar.  The service at the bar was friendly and prompt.

Drinks:  The Tavern has a couple of micros and domestics on tap along with a well-stocked bar that includes a variety of higher end scotches.  But most importantly they have the classic English pub ale Boddingtons on tap.

Food:  The Tavern’s menu provides a more upscale comfort food selection which comes with a little higher price tag. Appetizers include steamed mussels, smoked New York strip steak, wings, and ribs to mention a few. We tried the artichoke dip which was served with tortilla chips and sliced veggies, giving it a healthy twist. It was very tasty and our only complaint would be the overly large chunks of artichokes in the dip made it hard to eat. The rest of the menu is comprised of soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches and pizza’s baked in their wood fire oven. The pizzas came recommended by the bartender so we tried the taco pizza. This clash of cuisines had the crunch of a taco with the doughy goodness of a pizza.

The happy hour bar crowd is a good judge of a popular place. If it’s getting crowded at 3pm chances are they have a decent amount of business the rest of the time. Pappy’s Corner Pub is a bar and restaurant that is clearly one of those places. We have visited this place a number of times and procrastinated in reviewing it, which isn’t fair, because they offer above average bar food in a comfortable, clean environment.

Atmosphere: The outside of this bar isn’t very inviting due to its office building appearance. There’s also confusion in an Irish pub looking too clean and this place is way too clean. A big part of an Irish pubs appeal is its rustic charm, and Pappy’s is somewhat lacking in this department. The restaurant and bar is large, open, bright, with a mix of booths and wooden tables (high-top & regular-sized) scattered across a white tile floor. Outside there is a nice large patio furnished with chairs and tables. The crowd was on the more mature side and comprised of mostly men, but it was happy hour and there were Tv’s spewing sports all over the bar.

Service:  The service was good but nothing over the top. There were several servers on duty taking care of their designated areas and two bartenders keeping the drinks flowing. All in all we had no complaints in the service department.

Drinks:  A very average stocked bar with a few micros and domestics on tap. That being said, we had one of the best bloody mary’s here we have ever had and a pretty decent Tokyo iced tea. With $2.50 domestic drafts, $3.50 micro drafts and $3 wells during happy hour, we had no complaints regardless of selection.

 Food:  The food is the redeeming quality for this pub with items like fish n chips, burgers, sandwiches and salads on the menu.  Being served the typical pub food without the typical saturation of grease was refreshing. They have a nice selection of side items, but we have to recommend the fries – they were amazing. We tried the Black and Blue burger and the Philly Cheese steak sandwich on this visit and were pleased as usual.

 Amenities: Shuffle board, HD TV’s, fish tank, patio, kids menu, catering menu, banquet room, projection screen TV, video games.

Parking: There is ample parking in the lot surrounding Pappy’s, take out.

Crazy Jack’s Saloon is a place we frequent  mainly because of the cheap beer and tasty hot-wings. It’s about halfway between Loveland and Fort Collins in a less-than-flashy location, but is our kind of place. It’s always a mixed crowd but definitely not a college bar. It does appear they recently added a stage and removed one pool table for comedy nights and karaoke.

Atmosphere:  The décor inside has a 50’s diner feel to it, which is a little strange for a dive bar, but appear on the newer side. The lighting is perfectly dim even in the middle of the day.   There is a jukebox in the corner full of recognizable songs if you where born before 1990.  However, during our visit, there was some more modern tunes flowing from the speakers.  There is ample seating at the metal topped bar, high top tables and booths located along the outer walls. The entire place is clean , I mean very clean for a bar and this would include the bathrooms.

Service:  Good service , usually provided by the bartender.  The owner seems to always be around to lend a hand.  Not the biggest kitchen so if its crowded (it’s usually not) you may need to wait a couple extra minutes for your food.  But it’s served hot and promptly.

Drinks:  Your usual selection of local craft and domestic brews at a very affordable price .  They are a bit lacking in the import beer department.  A full bar, however no drink menu.  Seems to be your average beer and a shot kind of joint.  So if your looking for something with an umbrella, you’ll need to bring your own.

Food: The menu is a standard “bar menu” in the $5 to $8 range. Their big draw is the “Famous Jumbo Wings” with order sizes from 6 to 50 wings and a variety of flavors. They offer a flaming inferno wing challenge that will cost you an extra $.50, a few minutes of lip tingling, and some sweat on your brow.  However I think the challenge is only a personal one to test your intestinal fortitude. The wings are some of the best around, with the perfect combination of tenderness and crispiness .

Parking:  There is ample parking in the lot surrounding the bar. Additional parking behind it as well.

The Buzz:  Karaoke on Friday’s, Comedy on select nights, 50 cent wings on Sunday’s, Blues and Rock bands on Thursdays, $2 coors lights before 7pm every day.
