We are easily pleased bar- goers and hate to rush out of a place, but Bar SS had us closing our tab and thinking about a plan B. We ventured over to Laporte one weekend to see some live music and enjoy a local dive, but found ourselves faced with a $5 cover charge and some overpriced beer – at a virtually empty bar.
Atmosphere: Bar Double S is a total dive bar that appears, on the outside, to have once been a house. It may have recently been painted and improved on, but only on the outside. The parking area is more like a side lot with room for maybe 7 cars. Inside its dark; it’s smelly; it’s old; it’s wood; it’s rustic. The bar does provide a few old schools TV’s, pool tables, dart boards plus it has live music in the corner of the room. There is a patio out back with tables, wood benches, shuffle board, horse shoes (of course!) and a large outdoor stage for warmer weather shenanigans. The memorabilia on the walls are rod iron designs or may be better described as “trinkets”. There is also painted designs on the walls that would appear to be replicas of branding iron designs. There is a large “L” shaped bar with plenty of seating and a few high top tables throughout. The crowd here was a “local’s only” type and they made sure we knew it.
Service: Service at the bar was slow and considering there was only about 5 people in the place, total, we shouldn’t have had to wait long. Once the bartender reached us, a $5 cover was demanded.
Drinks: They have a full bar and a good selection of local micros and imports. However, their prices combined with the ridiculous demand for a cover in an empty bar, made for a rather expensive round of drinks.
Food: We were not offered a menu and from the looks of the place, there did not appear to be a kitchen.
Amenities: Tv’s, Pool tables, dart boards, patio, bike racks, shuffle board outside, horse shoes outside.
Parking: There are a few places to park on the side of the building or you may find it on the street.
The Buzz: Daily drink specials, ride your bike to the bar and get $3 micros all night, live music nightly, open mic night on Wednesdays.
